If you rev up the incinerator availability, you may find that you can get away with bulldozing or relocating some of the landfills (as long as the roadways are still green). Make sure your incinerators are keeping your incineration rate as green as possible, and you will be able to cut down on the amount of landfills needed along with the amount of pollution they produce. If all of the above is simply not possible, I place the landfill and just keep an eye on it, zoning right around the very edge of the pollution. If I absolutely can't manage to green the routes while keeping the landfill inside industrial zones, I usually make a designated, secluded dead-end that still connects well to traffic. It helps to have a patterned residential/commercial grid with industrial outside those grids in more than one direction (in my experience). In that sense, having things in isolated areas usually has you running into trouble one way or another late-game. by default, that usually helps my trash management. Ideally, your industrial zones will eventually be in more than one area, so that your residents don't all commute in the same direction and so you can specialize your districts in various resources.
